Sat, March 12, 2005 - 6:23 PMShort for "alternate nickname" or "alt nick." Similar to "fakesters" on Friendster.
An alt is commonly a secondary profile that someone creates in order to "be creative," or cause trouble / hide behind anonymity / deflect accountability. But some people don't have a "real" profile at all, and only post in character.
Sometimes the line between "real" and "alt" is blurry. Several members of this tribe do not post much/any real information about themselves online, yet are genuine flesh and blood people who do hang out / attend events. -
